This state of the art facility was specifically designed with careful consideration of the preservation, care and management of the Artbank collection. With a dedicated gallery space showcasing works in the Collection, and over 4,000 works to choose from, Artbank clients are encouraged to get lost in the racks.
Our head office is located in Waterloo, Sydney. The heritage façade and entry tower of the building – once the Wormald Bros. factory constructed in 1912 – has housed the Artbank collection and staff since 2014.
Award winning architecture and design studio Aileen Sage (Isabelle Toland and Amelia Holliday) conducted the fit out of the warehouse and office space:
“Playfulness and connectivity are the drivers of the design. The new interior spaces provide a strong visual connection between the administration and the art storage. From the meeting rooms, visitors can look down into ‘the machine’ – a huge black steel structure of sliding panels on which the majority of the art collection is hung, and across to the mezzanine storage and black box of the goods lift.
Views into the dramatic black entry tower are captured throughout the workspace, the polished black concrete floor of the tower reflects the suspended artwork above, creating a dramatic entry point into the new facility. Mirrored faces to the reception desk and publically accessible bathroom create unusual and surprising spaces with inspiration drawn from Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Rooms and Donald Judd’s minimalist art objects.”
The collection store in Sydney holds approximately 4000 artworks at any one time, growing and evolving with acquisitions and movement of works in and out of clients’ premises through the art leasing initiative. The gallery space is activated by an exhibition program and bespoke events throughout the year.
