Every landscape is woven with layers of narrative that relay not only stories of past usage, but stories about ourselves. Across diverse practices, artists consistently return to the landscape to explore and confront environmental, political and cultural tensions.
In Uncertain Territory the artists pull apart and reconfigure deeply ingrained landscape narratives, confronting us with hauntings we have tried to repress, presenting us with radical plans for future engagement, and encouraging us to imagine new relationships to place.
From a defiant canvas by Kunmanara Williams, where colonial legacies are superseded by ancient Pitjantjatjara stories and traditional lore, to the socially engaged practices of Ian Milliss and the Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation that combat destructive outdated ways of inhabiting and using the land, the artists challenge us to rethink the culturally ingrained ways we see and interact with our environment.
